Cosmetic Dentistry: Getting Veneers

Cosmetic Dentist Columbia, SC

Veneers are one of the most commonly used restorations in cosmetic dentistry. They are thin, tooth-shaped shells that are placed over the front surface of a tooth. A veneer acts as a mask, hiding all the imperfections on the front of the tooth that it covers.

No other cosmetic dentistry restoration compares to dental veneers when it comes to their ability to transform one's smile into an amazing one. They are long-lasting and natural-looking, which makes for a pleasant smile with little to no imperfections.

How veneers are used in cosmetic dentistry

Veneers are versatile restorations that can be used to fix a variety of aesthetic issues like crooked teeth, poorly-aligned teeth, stained teeth, short teeth, gaps and deformed teeth, which is why they are so commonly used in cosmetic dentistry settings.

The installation of veneers requires the removal of small portions of the enamel. This ensures the veneers do not make the patient's teeth appear abnormally bulky after their installation. The removal of enamel is a permanent procedure so it cannot be reversed in the future.

Once the dentist removes an appropriate amount of enamel, an impression of the patient's teeth might be taken or digital images are used to create a 3D model of the patient's teeth. This information is sent to a dental lab that makes restorations like veneers. It takes about two weeks for the lab to make the patient's restorations and get them back to the dentist.

In the meantime, the patient is fitted with temporary veneers and sent on their way. They are called in for a second appointment when their customized veneers are ready. The dentist takes off the temporary veneers and cements the customized ones in place. Adjustments are made as needed to ensure a proper fit.

Taking care of veneers after their installation

There is not much of a recovery period after the installation of veneers. The patient is free to go back to their daily activities after the procedure, and they can eat like they normally would once the anesthetic wears off. Dentists recommend not eating while under the effects of an anesthetic since it can lead to the patient chewing on their cheeks or tongue.

Some patients might notice a few rough spots after getting veneers. This is often caused by extra cement used to keep veneers in place and these rough spots should wear down after a few days of oral hygiene and meals. If these rough spots do not go away on their own, the dentist can smooth them out to ensure good aesthetics.

Porcelain veneers are often used in cosmetic dentistry since they provide the best aesthetics. These restorations can last up to 15 years with good oral hygiene. People with veneers can improve their longevity by taking certain precautions like:

  • Not chewing on hard things like ice or fingernails
  • Not opening packages or soda bottles with teeth
  • Not chewing with front teeth. The teeth at the back of the mouth are better suited for that
  • Using protective gear like mouthguards and nightguards to protect teeth
