Do People Respond Differently to Invisalign® Aligners Treatment?

Invisalign® aligners have become a popular teeth-straightening option for people looking for discreet and effective treatment. It is more convenient to have transparent trays that can come off the teeth at will, but they are not recommended for everybody. The aligners can correct most orthodontic issues, but some patients may get better results from traditional braces.

How patients respond to treatment

Although braces and Invisalign work differently, they follow the same fundamental principles of teeth-straightening: They induce pressure on the teeth to move them. A patient’s response to treatment depends on the condition of their oral cavity. The amount of jaw and teeth movement required to move the jaw usually determines how effective Invisalign will be for this condition. In complex cases, traditional braces might be better. The following are factors that may affect how patients respond to Invisalign aligner treatment.

The severity of the orthodontic issue

If the teeth and jaw need to move significantly, Invisalign might not be the first treatment choice. These aligners have been improved over the years to make them effective for more types of orthodontic issues, but traditional braces might still be the better option for complex cases. When in doubt, the safe choice is to seek the dentist’s opinion to find out if the aligners will work for the dental issue.

Presence of dental issues

Patients who have decayed teeth or dental issues will need to undergo treatment for them before getting Invisalign. If cavities are left untreated, they will worsen, and treating them will require patients to be without the aligner trays. Dental work during teeth straightening can affect treatment progress.

The patient’s age

Younger patients with developing jaws may not be ideal candidates for Invisalign. They may not comply well with wearing them and keep their teeth clean. Teenagers and adults are better able to adhere to Invisalign guidelines because they understand the importance of treatment. For teenagers, their jaw also tends to respond better to movement than adults.

Poor oral hygiene

Some adults fail to maintain a good oral hygiene routine and therefore, are not advised to get aligners. Poor oral health during Invisalign aligners treatment can compromise the structure of the oral cavity, which can lead to dental treatments and prolonged treatment time. Patients considering teeth straightening treatment need to be ready to keep their teeth and aligner trays clean.

Consistency

Invisalign requires a level of commitment and consistency. The dentist will recommend wearing the aligners for at least 22 hours a day and only removing them when eating, drinking, or cleaning the mouth. It is important that patients create the habit of wearing them consistently, or the teeth may start to shift, and the aligners will not work as they should. Patients need to adhere to the dentist’s guidelines and use a retainer after treatment.

In conclusion

When patients follow instructions and use the Invisalign aligners as directed, they can expect their treatment to go according to plan. If you have any concerns, you can book an appointment with the dentist for a consultation.
