Are you thinking of getting teeth whitening treatments? As time goes on, no matter how well a person takes care of their teeth by brushing, using mouthwash, and flossing, their teeth can become stained. Over time, their smile may not be as bright anymore and it may leave them desiring to have bright white teeth again.
There are many options when it comes to teeth whitening. From different products in supermarkets and stores promoting whiter teeth to strips and trays that can be used at home to whiten teeth, there is definitely not a shortage of teeth whitening products. However, some whitening methods are better than others and in this article, we will go over some of the basics of teeth whitening.
Teeth whitening basics
One of the most common questions is about why teeth become less white in the first place. Of course, most people know about cutting back on drinking coffee and dark beverages, but what exactly do these foods and beverages do that cause the teeth to become less white?
It all rests in the enamel
The enamel of the teeth is porous. When eating and drinking, these pores are filled and fight off bacteria and other external things from entering the teeth. However, as years go on and different substances sit on the teeth throughout the day before someone brushes their teeth at night, staining can begin occurring.
Over time, the staining can continue and become more pronounced and noticeable. Once it reaches this level, the best thing that someone can do is to look into teeth whitening treatments to help in restoring the white look that they once had.
Dental whitening strips
One popular at-home method of teeth whitening is dental whitening strips. They are typically bought to be done over a few weeks with one or two applications per day. Doing this can typically whiten the teeth to around two shades brighter.
One thing to remember is that these whitening strips can cause extra teeth sensitivity over time.
Teeth whitening at the dentist's office
For people that are looking to get much whiter teeth (around 10 shades whiter), the best option is to have it done by a dentist. With the current dental technology available, the gel that a dentist can use will get the teeth much whiter and brighter in a short amount of time.
When someone has their teeth whitened at a dentist's office, there will be a big difference that will be more noticeable. Typically these can be done in just one appointment and the results are remarkable.
