A dental filling is a non-invasive and affordable treatment option that is optimal for filling small holes in teeth.
A dental filling may be necessary if a dental patient has one or more dental cavities. However, dental fillings are best for small cavities, and they are less ideal for filling large cavities. Although metal or gold fillings may be available when a stronger restoration is necessary, dentists can use tooth-colored restorations to help ensure the optimal appearance of the tooth.
A dental filling may not be an ideal solution if the cavity is large or extends into deeper layers of the tooth, which is known as “deep tooth decay.” It may also not be an option if the tooth is loose or damaged due to periodontal (gum and bone) concerns.
The most notable alternative to a dental filling is a root canal procedure, which is recommended when the cavity is too large for a routine filling to adequately address. A root canal procedure involves the use of gutta-percha rather than amalgam or composite resin, which is more suitable for larger cavities.
The long-term focus should be to protect teeth that have been filled and prevent additional dental cavities to natural teeth. This can be accomplished by keeping enamel as strong as possible through a consistent brushing and flossing schedule and avoiding an excessive level of sugar consumption. Regular dental cleanings are also helpful in keeping enamel clean and healthy.
